One of the most impressive buildings in Spain is the Mosque of Córdoba, one of the best examples of muslim architecture, and also a memory of the time they spent living in al-Andalus.
The Mosque has five different periods of construction. Started in 780 by abd al-Rahman I as an independence symbol against the Abbasí caliphate inb Baghdad. It was extended after fifty years by abd al-Rahman II, who included the famous four dark jade columns now in front of the mihrab. The most important intervention was made by al-Hakam II in 961, who ordered the construction of the three domes in gold and ivory imported from Byzantium. The dual-colored archs are the most famous sign of the building, and the were conceived from the first day and continued until the last ampliation in Xth century by al-Mansur.
The Mosque has become an important symbol of the city, and also of the muslim presence in Spain. For the visitors, it provides an image of the architectonical genius of the muslims, and the power of the caliphate of Qurtubah.
